Reading the NFRC Label Before You Buy Windows in Syracuse
Published July 1, 2026

Every replacement window carries a little white NFRC sticker, and most homeowners peel it off without a second look. In a climate like ours, that label is the most useful thing on the window. It tells you, in plain numbers, how the unit will perform against a Syracuse January. Here is how to read it before you sign anything.
U-Factor Is the One to Watch
The U-factor measures how fast heat escapes through the whole window, and lower is better. For heating-dominated climates like Onondaga County, you want a low U-factor so the warmth you pay for stays inside. A drafty single pane might sit near 1.0, while a good low-E, argon-filled double pane lands around 0.30 or lower. That gap is what you feel standing next to the glass in February.
SHGC and Which Way the House Faces
The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient tells you how much of the sun’s heat the window lets in. In a cold climate a slightly higher SHGC on south-facing windows can be a small free heater, while west-facing glass that takes the afternoon sun and wind is usually better with a lower number. We look at how your house sits before recommending a package. A home off Genesee Street that takes the west wind gets a different spec than a shaded north wall.
Double-Pane, Triple-Pane, or Repair
Triple-pane pushes the U-factor lower and cuts noise, which is worth considering on the coldest walls, but a quality double-pane with low-E and argon already transforms an old house. If your frames are sound and only the glass has fogged, sometimes the smart move is a repair rather than a full replacement. Our full-frame window replacement page walks through when the whole opening needs to come out instead.
Do Not Forget the Install
The best-rated window in the world leaks if it is set crooked in an out-of-square opening, which describes a lot of older Syracuse framing. Flashing tape, foam, and a level, plumb set are what turn a good label into a warm room. That is the part a rating cannot show you, and the part we take the most care with.
Get a Real Measure
Numbers on a label only help once someone measures your actual openings and matches the glass to how your home faces the weather. If you are weighing new windows, contact us for a free in-home measure and a written quote that lists the ratings alongside the price.
